Topeka, KS – A powerful winter storm is set to hit Kansas with heavy snowfall and high winds beginning Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a blizzard warning, effective from 3 a.m. to midnight Sunday, with the potential for up to 14 inches of snowfall in some areas.
According to the NWS, central, northeast and eastern Kansas will experience blizzard conditions, with winds gusting up to 50 mph. There is a possibility of reduced visibility, power cuts and damage to trees. Roads will become slick, dangerous and potentially impassable.
The storm will be preceded by mixed precipitation Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with snow and sleet accumulations of up to four-tenths of an inch in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is expected along and north of US-50.
Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. An emergency kit should be prepared, including a torch, water and non-perishable food.
Local officials warned drivers to monitor road conditions by calling 511 and stay off the roads during the storm. Electricity companies are ready to deal with the cuts.
