China has clarified concerns over reports of a flu virus outbreak, assuring foreigners that it is safe to travel to the country. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated on Friday that respiratory infections are a common seasonal occurrence during winter in the northern hemisphere. “The diseases appear to be less severe and spread on a smaller scale compared to the previous year,” she told reporters.
Social media videos show overcrowded hospitals
Despite the government’s assurances, videos circulating on social media have shown overcrowded hospitals, raising concerns among travelers. Addressing these concerns, Mao emphasized the government’s commitment to public health:
“I can assure you the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners in China. It is safe to travel in China,” she said.
Enhanced monitoring in China
China’s health officials maintain that the outbreak is an expected seasonal phenomenon. Reports indicate the government has increased monitoring of emerging respiratory diseases to mitigate risks.
