Harrisburg, IL – Residents of southern Illinois are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions as a major snow storm is expected to hit the area Sunday morning through Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning, predicting significant snow accumulations of up to three-quarters of an inch and hazardous travel on major roads, including I-57.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will begin at 2 a.m. Sunday and continue through 6 a.m. Monday. Residents should be prepared for slick roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, as well as widespread power outages due to snow-laden power lines and tree limbs. There is a possibility of disruption in travel due to the storm, some roads will become impassable.
In addition to the snow, an Arctic blast will arrive Monday, causing temperatures to drop into the single digits and wind chills below zero. These conditions will make power outages even more dangerous. Residents are encouraged to stock up on essential items like food, water and batteries and avoid unnecessary travel.
Travelers on I-57 and surrounding roads are advised to delay travel or proceed with extreme caution. For those who must drive, an emergency kit including a flashlight, blanket, and non-perishable food is strongly recommended.
