Tehama County, CA – A brief EF-U-rated tornado struck Tehama County on Friday, the first tornado in the US this year.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Sacramento confirmed that the tornado touched down between 5:18 and 5:21 p.m., about eight miles northeast of Dairyville. The tornado measured an estimated 0.8 miles in length and struck a remote, non-populated area of the county.
According to the National Weather Service, no damage or injuries have been reported, and the high wind speed remains uncertain. Video footage and radar data from trained spotters helped confirm the incident. Officials determined that no survey team was needed due to lack of structural impact.
While tornadoes are rare in California, the state experiences an average of 12 tornadoes annually, usually with a weak EF-0 or EF-U rating. Officials say this tornado highlights the diverse weather patterns in Northern California.
The preliminary report is subject to update as meteorologists finalize 2025 tornado data in February.
