JACKSON, KY – A significant winter storm is expected to hit eastern Kentucky beginning Sunday morning, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain and dangerously cold temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for areas north of I-80, in effect Sunday through Tuesday morning.
According to the NWS in Jackson, the storm is expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation, with local areas seeing even higher numbers. Freezing rain will fall late Sunday night, creating hazardous travel conditions, especially on I-80 and surrounding roads. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages due to ice accumulation on power lines.
Temperatures will drop rapidly after the storm, with wind chill expected to drop below zero by Thursday. Forecasters warn it could cause frostbite and hypothermia for those left outside for long periods of time. Residents are urged to check heating systems and stock up on essential items before the storm arrives.
The extended forecast shows cold conditions continuing through the middle of the week, with highs barely reaching around 30 and lows falling into the teens. Light snowfall may continue on Monday, but the sky is expected to clear a bit by Tuesday, which will provide some relief from the storm.
Motorists are advised to monitor updates from local officials and the NWS for real-time road conditions and weather alerts. If you must travel, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with a blanket, water, and a flashlight.
