PUEBLO, CO – Colorado residents should prepare for hazardous conditions as a winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of the state through Saturday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo has issued warnings for both lowland and mountain areas, with snow, ice and high winds expected to cause travel difficulties.
According to the NWS, mixed precipitation will begin in Kiowa and Prowers counties, including Sheridan Lake, Eads and Lamar, beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday and continuing through 8 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, with snow accumulations around one-tenth of an inch. Wind gusts can reach up to 40 mph, making roads slick and dangerous, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Areas at elevations above 11,000 feet, such as the eastern Sawatch Mountains and East Lake County, will see snowfall. These areas are expected to get between 5 and 9 inches of snow, along with winds gusts up to 60 mph, starting at 2 a.m. Saturday and continuing through Sunday morning. Low visibility and possible tree and power line damage are expected in these areas.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution and check road conditions through the 511 hotline before traveling.
