SPOKANE, Washington – Freezing rain is expected to fall across Spokane and Coeur d’Alene Friday morning, creating a risk for travelers on US-2 and nearby roads. Snow accumulations up to 0.15 inches are expected, causing slippery conditions during peak travel hours.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Spokane, freezing rain will occur between 4 and 5 a.m., affecting areas from Airway Heights to Almira. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 AM to 1 PM Friday. Officials have urged drivers to reduce speeds, take extra travel time and be cautious on bridges and overpasses, stopping first.
Additional snowy areas are expected in surrounding areas, including Hayden, Cheyney and Spokane Valley. Motorists traveling along Interstate 90 and US-2 should prepare for reduced traction and possible delays.
Aside from Friday’s snowy start, weekend weather forecasts show light rain with highs in the mid-30s for Spokane, while Coeur d’Alene could see mixed precipitation Saturday. Temperatures are expected to drop below zero each night, increasing the chances of snow forming through the weekend.
Drivers are encouraged to check local road conditions before heading out via the Washington State Department of Transportation website or by dialing 511. Pedestrians should also pay attention to smooth sidewalks and take precautions to avoid falls.
