Springfield, MO – A significant winter storm will move through Missouri this weekend, bringing freezing rain, sleet and snow to Springfield through Saturday night. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions and sub-zero wind chills early next week.
A mix of rain, freezing rain and snow is expected from late Saturday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Springfield. This system could cause icy roads on highways such as I-44 and Route 65, creating dangerous driving conditions. Forecasts show there will be moderate impacts to travel north and east of Springfield, with minor disruptions elsewhere.
Rain will begin Saturday night before changing to freezing rain and snow on Sunday. The high temperature on Sunday will be near 39°F, but strong winds and rapidly dropping temperatures could turn wet roads into icy hazards overnight. By Monday morning, low temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits, with wind chills as low as -5°F.
The NWS recommends bringing pets indoors, covering exposed skin when outside, and avoiding the use of space heaters that emit carbon monoxide. Residents should also stock up on essential items and monitor local forecasts for updates on rainfall and travel impacts.
The severe cold will continue till Tuesday, with the maximum temperature during the day around 20 and wind chill below zero at night. Sunshine returns mid-week as temperatures slowly rise into the 30s.
