Hastings, NE – South-central Nebraska is facing freezing drizzle, heavy snow and freezing cold this weekend as a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. Residents should be prepared for hazardous travel conditions, especially along I-70, and take necessary safety preparations.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing drizzle will occur Saturday morning and turn to snow by Saturday evening. In some areas, particularly southeast of Hastings, 5 to 10 inches of snow accumulation is possible. Roads and bridges may be slick, with visibility sometimes dropping to a quarter mile due to blowing snow.
The heaviest snow is expected late Saturday night into early Sunday, with strong north winds gusting up to 35 mph. Temperatures will drop Sunday night and wind chills will drop below zero.
Motorists should delay travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit including water, blankets, and a flashlight. The NWS recommends checking road conditions before leaving home.
After the weekend, Monday will see partly cloudy skies and a high around 12°F, with temperatures gradually rising midweek. By Wednesday, high temperatures will reach the teens and sunny skies are expected.
