GREAT FALLS, MT – A powerful winter storm is approaching Montana’s mountain ranges, bringing significant snowfall and dangerous conditions through Saturday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Little Belt, Highwood and Snowy Mountains, with 5 to 10 inches of snowfall expected.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning will remain in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday. The heaviest snowfall will occur today, especially at higher elevations and mountain passes including Deep Creek Pass and Kings Hill Pass. Travelers are urged to carry emergency supplies and check road conditions before heading out.
Gusts of wind can create additional challenges, causing snowfall in areas and reducing visibility. Tire chains may be necessary for some vehicles operating on steep or icy terrain. Officials recommend using Montana’s 511 Road Report system for the latest travel updates.
The storm is expected to subside by late Saturday evening, but cooler temperatures and slick roads could persist into Sunday. Residents and visitors are encouraged to limit non-essential travel and prepare for possible delays.
Looking ahead, cool weather is forecast early next week, with temperatures slowly rising as the storm system moves east.
