Detroit, MI – Snow, rain and high winds are set to dominate the weather in Detroit and Michigan as the first weekend of 2025 approaches. Residents should be prepared for icy conditions Friday and high winds across Lake Huron through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a thunderstorm watch will be in effect for northern Lake Huron starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Sunday. Winds can reach up to 35 knots, and waves can range between 8 and 16 feet. A small craft advisory remains in effect for Saginaw Bay and adjacent waters of Lake Huron as of Sunday morning.
In Detroit, snow is expected Friday morning, potentially affecting morning commutes. Winds can reach up to 24 miles per hour. Accumulations will likely be less than half an inch, but drivers on major routes like I-75 and I-94 should remain cautious. Highs will reach 30°F on Friday, dropping to 19°F at night.
The weekend is bringing mixed conditions. Saturday will be partly cloudy with a high around 26°F and calm winds around 15 mph. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high near 28°F, which will provide a reprieve before snow chances return again on Monday.
Residents along the shores of Lake Huron are urged to keep small watercraft safe and avoid unnecessary travel near the shore. Drivers in the Detroit area should monitor road conditions and allow extra time for travel.
