GARRETT COUNTY, MD – Heavy snow and high winds are sweeping Garrett County and surrounding areas, creating hazardous travel conditions through Saturday morning. Forecasters are predicting up to 10 inches of snowfall and winds up to 50 mph, prompting a safety warning for residents.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will intensify Friday night, with snowfall reducing visibility to near zero in higher elevations. Major routes including Interstate 68 and US-40 are expected to see whiteout conditions, making travel dangerous and potentially life-threatening.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, as the storm may cause downed power lines and sporadic outages. If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.
The storm will begin to subside Saturday morning, but snow-covered roads and cold temperatures will remain a concern. Drivers should monitor local road conditions by dialing 511 for updates.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast predicts a brief respite on Sunday before another cold front moves in early next week, bringing the possibility of light snowfall and a drop in temperatures.
Stay informed by checking local weather alerts and limiting travel during dangerous conditions. For those going out, wear layers and cover exposed skin to avoid frostbite.
