Paducah, KY – Western Kentucky is under threat of a major winter storm, starting Saturday night and continuing through Sunday. Freezing rain, sleet and snow are expected to affect Paducah and surrounding areas with heavy snow accumulation likely.
Freezing rain is expected to begin just after midnight Saturday, changing to a mix of sleet and snow by Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah. Snow accumulations up to a quarter inch are possible, especially on Interstate 24, causing hazardous travel conditions. Temperatures will range from the upper 20s to low 40s, but cooler conditions are expected to persist, especially in shady areas.
Officials warned residents to limit travel during peak storm hours and to be prepared for possible power outages caused by snow-laden tree limbs and utility lines. Road crews are prepared, but icy patches can develop quickly, especially on bridges and overpasses. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and keep emergency kits in their vehicles.
The winter storm will subside late Sunday night and the rain will reduce. However, temperatures will drop into the low 20s overnight, allowing the remaining precipitation to freeze. Monday is expected to be mostly cloudy and the maximum temperature will be around 30, which will provide some relief from the icy conditions.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain cool throughout the week, with Tuesday being partly sunny with a high in the 20s. North-westerly winds will continue, due to which there will be less coolness in the air.
