KANSAS CITY, MO – A significant winter storm is expected to impact northeastern Kansas and northern Missouri beginning Saturday afternoon, bringing hazardous weather conditions through late Sunday night. Up to 13 inches of snow, sleet and freezing rain could accumulate, creating hazardous travel conditions on major roadways including Highway 50 and I-70.
Freezing rain will fall south of Highway 50 Saturday evening, changing to snow by Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, further complicating travel and increasing the risk of power outages. Residents should plan in advance and avoid unnecessary travel.
Highs on Saturday are expected to reach 28 degrees Fahrenheit and freezing rain will begin after 3 p.m., with sleet and snow expected to intensify as temperatures drop into the low 20s by Saturday night. There will be heavy snow throughout the day Sunday, with highs around 23°F and gusty winds.
The storm is expected to cause travel disruptions on I-70, Highway 50 and Highway 36, with conditions potentially becoming impassable in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is expected in northern Missouri, but exact snowfall figures remain uncertain.
Looking ahead, temperatures will drop further on Monday, with a high reaching only 13°F. The minimum temperature on Monday and Tuesday night may go below zero, due to cold winds the cold will be felt even more.
Residents are urged to keep an eye on the latest weather updates and prepare emergency kits with food, water and flashlights. Make sure vehicles are equipped for icy conditions and stay indoors whenever possible.
