Indiana Weather Alert: Lake-Effect Snow Brings Slippery Roads to US-24 and Southern Michigan This Weekend

FORT WAYNE, IN – Lake-effect snowfall will continue across northern Indiana and southern Michigan today, causing poor road conditions and dangerous travel on major routes including US-24 and US-6. There will be a drop in temperatures, with the maximum day temperature on Friday being between 24 and 29 degrees and the minimum falling to 11 degrees at night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana, drivers should prepare for up to 2 inches of snowfall today and Saturday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected in southern Michigan, with reduced visibility during snow bursts. Roads can be dangerous, especially at night, as temperatures drop further and roads freeze again.

There will be some relief on Saturday as snowfall will reduce by late morning. However, cool air will settle over the region, keeping day temperatures between 21 and 25 degrees. Winds coming from the northwest can increase the cold, causing chills in the teens.

The NWS also issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the weekend, warning of additional snow accumulations late Sunday and into Monday. Early projections show that central and southern Indiana could face a more significant winter storm as early as next week.

Residents are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel, especially on untreated surfaces. Avoid unnecessary trips during heavy snowfall and make sure your vehicle is equipped for winter conditions.
