Memphis, TN – A sudden freeze is expected to hit Memphis late Sunday night, creating dangerous conditions for drivers across the region. Heavy rain will fall across the region on Sunday before temperatures drop rapidly into the low 20s overnight. The sudden cold snap can cause black ice to accumulate on roads including I-40 and I-240, creating dangerous driving conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Memphis, rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected before the cold air moves in Sunday evening. Due to the rapid drop in temperature, the remaining water will accumulate on the roads, making the situation worse by Monday morning. Officials are urging residents to keep an eye on weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel late Sunday night and Monday morning.
Saturday will bring dry conditions, with sunny skies and a high near 45°F. Rain begins Saturday night, increasing through Sunday morning with possible thunderstorms. Sunday’s high will reach 61°F before temperatures drop after sunset. By Monday, the high will struggle to reach 33°F, with wind gusts making it feel even colder.
Travelers are advised to prepare for delays and use caution, especially on bridges, overpasses and less traveled roads, where the risk of freezing is higher. Keep an emergency kit in your car and plan routes carefully to avoid potentially icy areas.
Looking ahead, the weather will settle out midweek, with sunny skies from Tuesday through Thursday and highs expected to be in the 30s.
