SPARTANBURG, SC – Residents in the Upstate area should prepare for snow and high winds impacting higher elevation areas today and Saturday. The National Weather Service estimates that light snow accumulations will occur above 3,500 feet near the North Carolina-Tennessee border, along with winds of 40-50 mph this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, snow showers will begin in the afternoon and continue into the evening, primarily targeting mountainous areas. Travel conditions on routes such as Highway 276 and surrounding mountain passes can be slippery, especially when temperatures drop below zero at night. Drivers are urged to use caution and monitor road conditions.
Saturday will see clear skies but a chilly breeze, with daytime highs near 43°F and lows dropping to 25°F in Spartanburg. Winds will calm down overnight, providing some relief after Friday’s high winds.
Looking at the first week of January, Sunday will have a mild start with temperatures hovering around 42°F, but there will be a chance of rain by evening, turning into heavy rain on Monday. Temperatures could reach as high as 52°F on Monday before another cold front moves in overnight, dropping the low to 26°F.
Residents should be prepared for fluctuating conditions and keep an eye on the forecast for possible weather updates. Make sure outdoor plans are flexible, especially for travel at higher altitudes, and secure lightweight outdoor items to prevent wind damage.
