SACRAMENTO, CA – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect today, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions to higher elevations in Northern California. The warning issued by the National Weather Service is active from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, areas above 5,500 feet could see 8-12 inches of snowfall, with some mountain peaks receiving up to 16 inches. Snow levels are expected to drop to 4,500 feet by afternoon. Major highways, including Interstate 80, may experience hazardous conditions including slippery roads and significant reduced visibility. Hikers are strongly discouraged from venturing into mountain areas without chains or winter vehicles.
Friday’s forecast for Sacramento calls for rain throughout the morning, tapering off by the afternoon and dense fog by 3 p.m., with a high of 54°F with calm winds. Tonight, skies will clear as temperatures will drop to 41°F, setting the stage for a cool weekend.
Saturday and Sunday will see sunny skies and daytime highs in the low to mid 50s, providing a reprieve from the storm. The minimum night temperature will be around 40°F. Looking ahead to next week, Monday and Tuesday will be mostly sunny with temperatures reaching near 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
