Chicago, IL – Snow is expected to disrupt travel today, with the greatest impact expected south of I-80. Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads and low visibility beginning this afternoon and continuing into the evening. Authorities have urged travelers to take extra time and drive with caution.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow will begin accumulating near Sterling, Illinois and will extend to Valparaiso, Indiana. It is estimated that the system will subside by midnight. Most areas will see totals between 1 to 3 inches, with the highest accumulations south of I-80. Unplowed roads have the potential to pose significant hazards, especially during peak travel hours.
Looking ahead, Friday will see breezy winds as temperatures struggle to reach 24°F. Gusty winds up to 30 mph will create bitter cold. Saturday’s forecast will call for clear skies but cold temperatures, with highs reaching 23°F and lows falling into the single digits. There’s another chance for snow Sunday, especially in central Illinois and Indiana, with snow likely extending into Monday morning.
For those planning travel or outdoor activities, officials recommend staying informed by checking updated forecasts and road conditions. Snow removal crews are expected to focus on major thoroughfares, but secondary roads may remain dangerous.
Residents are reminded to dress warmly, as temperatures will remain below zero throughout the weekend, with wind chills dropping into the negative digits at night. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
