2.9 magnitude earthquake felt in northeast Indiana and Ohio


HICKSVILLE, Ohio (WANE) — An earthquake was felt in parts of Ohio and northeast Indiana early Sunday.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 2.9 mb_L earthquake was felt in parts of northwest Ohio and northeast Indiana. According to USGS, the hypocentre or centerpoint of the earthquake happened approximately 0.5 miles just southeast of Hicksville, Ohio.

The map on USGS shows waves have been felt as far as southwest Fort Wayne.

The origin time of the earthquake was 11:46 UTC or 6:46 a.m EST.

An mb_L is a type of earthquake measurement used for regionally central or eastern United States events, as they are often based on the amplitude of Lg surface waves recorded on short-period instruments, according to USGS.

As of 8 a.m. this morning, 57 people in the area have reported they felt the seismic activity.
