Columbia, SC – Storm survey teams have confirmed three tornadoes touched down across Fairfield and Richland counties Sunday morning, leaving residents assessing damage. The strongest tornado, an EF1, struck near Winnsboro, with two EF0 tornadoes also recorded near Rion and Spring Hill.
According to the National Weather Service, the EF1 tornado near Winnsboro packed winds up to 110 mph, leaving downed trees and minor structural damage in its path. The two EF0 tornadoes had weaker winds but still caused disruptions in rural areas, primarily damaging power lines and scattered debris. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
As cleanup continues, South Carolina is set to experience calmer weather this week. New Year’s Eve will bring sunny skies with highs near 69°F and clear conditions overnight, dipping to 43°F. New Year’s Day will also be sunny with highs in the upper 50s.
While sunny skies are expected, residents should remain cautious while driving in tornado-affected areas, particularly near Rion and Winnsboro, where cleanup efforts are ongoing. The National Weather Service advises monitoring forecasts for any updates, as cooler temperatures and frost are expected by midweek.
