Reno, NV – Hazardous winds swept across Nevada on Sunday, with gusts reaching up to 91 mph at Heavenly Ski Resort. The powerful winds disrupted outdoor activities and raised concerns for travelers heading into New Year’s celebrations.
According to the National Weather Service, the Lake Tahoe region faced some of the strongest gusts, including 83 mph at Mammoth Mountain and 77 mph in Mill Canyon. Winds have since subsided and are expected to taper off entirely by Monday evening, providing a calmer outlook for the week ahead.
Residents and visitors should anticipate partly sunny skies on Tuesday, with temperatures in Reno reaching a high of 42°F. Overnight lows will dip to 20°F under mostly clear skies. As New Year’s Day approaches, calm winds and sunny conditions are forecast, making it ideal for outdoor celebrations.
For those traveling through the Sierra region, the five-day forecast highlights continued dry weather. By Thursday, highs near 54°F are expected, although rain may return on Friday as snow levels drop to 6,400 feet in the evening.
Drivers on I-580 and other mountain roadways are encouraged to remain cautious as Friday’s precipitation could create slick conditions at higher elevations. Those planning New Year’s trips should monitor forecasts for potential updates.
While this week promises calmer weather, local officials advise securing loose outdoor items and preparing for Friday’s possible rain and snow mix. Stay informed through the National Weather Service for real-time updates.
