Michigan City, IN – A former school bus driver for the La Porte Community School Corporation (LPCSC) faces felony charges after allegedly transporting 32 students while under the influence of alcohol on September 20th.
Kayla I. Pier, 38, was charged with Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) and Neglect of a Dependent following an investigation by La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Crail. The incident occurred during Pier’s afternoon route from La Porte Middle School to Riley Elementary School.
Concerns about Pier’s driving behavior were raised by students onboard the bus. The Transportation Director intercepted the bus at Riley Elementary School, removing Pier from duty. Later that day, Pier resigned from her position. Toxicology results from a test conducted on September 20th reportedly confirmed the allegations.
Deputy Crail gathered evidence, including video footage from the school bus and witness statements, before filing a probable cause affidavit on December 19th. The next day, an arrest warrant was issued. Pier surrendered to authorities on December 27th and was released after posting bond.
Captain Derek J. Allen commended the students for their prompt action, emphasizing the critical role they played in preventing a potential tragedy. School officials were also praised for their swift cooperation.
Pier is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
