Philadelphia, PA – Freezing rain is forecast tonight into early Saturday across Pennsylvania, primarily impacting areas near and north of Interstate 78. Holiday travelers should prepare for slippery roads and icy conditions starting tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will begin as rain this evening as temperatures hover near freezing, creating hazardous driving conditions. The freezing rain is expected to persist overnight before transitioning to rain by Saturday morning. Those planning to travel overnight or early Saturday are advised to avoid unnecessary trips or delay travel until conditions improve.
Saturday’s forecast shows a high near 51°F, with rain continuing in the morning and tapering off by the afternoon. The wet weather is part of a warming trend that will bring higher temperatures into the start of next week. However, freezing rain tonight poses significant risks, particularly for untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Drivers near I-78 and surrounding regions should monitor weather updates and use extreme caution. Rainfall amounts are expected to be light, but even a thin glaze of ice can cause serious issues on roadways. Additionally, gusty winds may accompany the system, creating additional challenges for motorists.
Looking ahead, Sunday is expected to be cloudy with a high of 62°F, while Monday will bring a chance of scattered showers with highs in the mid-50s. Cooler temperatures will return midweek, with highs in the 40s and sunny skies expected by Wednesday.
