Lake George, MI – A grandfather and grandson narrowly escaped tragedy Thursday after falling through thin ice on Lake George. Quick action by a neighbor and emergency responders saved their lives.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. near Leonard Road in Addison Township. The pair, a 66-year-old Lapeer man and his 15-year-old grandson, were drilling a hole for ice fishing when the ice cracked beneath them.
A nearby resident used a kayak to keep the grandfather’s head above water until Addison Township firefighters arrived. Rescuers pulled the man from the lake and performed CPR. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The grandson was treated and released.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard praised the neighbor’s bravery and urged caution, citing fluctuating temperatures causing dangerous ice conditions. Officials emphasized the importance of life jackets and emergency preparedness for winter activities.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved.
Authorities from Lapeer and Clinton counties also responded to assist. The Sheriff’s Office continues to warn residents of unstable ice this winter.
