Caribou, ME – A stretch of calm and sunny weather is giving way to potentially hazardous conditions this weekend, as freezing rain looms over northern Maine. Residents are urged to prepare for slippery roads and difficult travel starting Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, clear skies and near-normal temperatures are expected Friday and Saturday. Highs will reach the mid-20s with light winds, providing ideal post-holiday travel weather. However, a significant shift begins late Sunday, when freezing rain is likely to develop, creating treacherous conditions for drivers.
The freezing rain is expected to intensify overnight Sunday into early Monday morning. Temperatures will hover near freezing, complicating efforts to treat roadways. Areas along major routes, including Route 1 and I-95, may experience ice accumulation, making travel hazardous.
By Monday, the storm will bring additional rain, further increasing the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas. Commuters should monitor weather updates and consider delaying travel until conditions improve.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, temperatures will rise into the high 30s, with showers persisting into Tuesday. While this warmer trend will reduce ice, standing water could lead to additional hazards.
Drivers and pedestrians are advised to take precautions, check local forecasts regularly, and stock vehicles with emergency supplies. Stay updated through local alerts and plan accordingly for the weekend.
