Des Moines, IA – Dense fog is blanketing much of Iowa this morning, creating hazardous driving conditions, especially along major highways like I-80. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel and exercise caution as visibility has dropped to less than a quarter mile in many areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday. The advisory warns of significantly reduced visibility that could lead to dangerous road conditions, particularly during morning commutes. Travelers are encouraged to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and increase following distances.

Thursday’s forecast includes light drizzle and overcast skies, with temperatures peaking at 43°F later in the day. Fog may persist into the afternoon before giving way to patchy clearing. Overnight, drizzle and more fog are expected, with lows dipping to 38°F.

Looking ahead, Friday brings increased rain chances, with heavier showers expected into the evening. Temperatures will remain unseasonably mild, reaching 47°F. The weekend features mostly cloudy skies, highs near 50°F, and a slight cooldown by Sunday night.

Travelers should monitor updates closely as the post-Christmas travel rush continues. Plan for potential delays and allow extra time for trips through Sunday.
