Phoenix, AZ – Christmas in the Valley of the Sun will bring cooler weather, but residents should also prepare for health risks. An air quality advisory remains in effect for Maricopa County, including the Phoenix metro area, through Wednesday.
According to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, stagnant weather conditions combined with high pollution levels are causing elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM-2.5). This can aggravate asthma, heart disease, and other health conditions, particularly among vulnerable groups like children and older adults. Residents are urged to reduce outdoor activities and avoid using wood-burning fireplaces or gas-powered lawn equipment.
Christmas Day will see sunny skies and a high of 67°F, followed by clear conditions with a low around 44°F Wednesday night. Temperatures will remain cooler through the week, with highs in the mid-60s and lows dipping into the 40s. Breezy conditions are expected to ease pollution levels by Thursday.
Heading into the weekend, Friday will bring mostly sunny skies and a high near 67°F, warming slightly to 70°F by Saturday. Residents planning outdoor holiday celebrations should enjoy favorable weather but stay mindful of air quality advisories.
For updated pollution levels and precautions, visit the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality’s website or call 602-771-2300. Stay safe and celebrate responsibly this holiday season.
