Cooter, MO – A minor earthquake struck near Cooter early Sunday morning, briefly shaking the small southeast Missouri community.
The 2.7 magnitude quake was recorded at 10:02 p.m. local time on Saturday night. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was 1 kilometer west-northwest of Cooter, with a depth of 9.8 kilometers.
Residents in the region reported light shaking but no significant damage or injuries. The USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” platform received three reports from locals, who described brief tremors that startled them but caused no major disruptions.
Earthquakes in this part of Missouri are relatively common due to the area’s proximity to the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Scientists regularly monitor seismic activity in this region, which has historically experienced significant quakes.
