The Texas Tax-Free Weekend, from August 9th to August 11th, allows shoppers to buy most clothing, shoes, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 without paying sales tax, promoting local shopping and savings.

Texas Tax-Free Weekend 2024: What You Can Buy and Key Dates

According to Marca, the Texas Tax-Free Weekend will start on Friday, August 9th, and go until midnight on Sunday, August 11th. This yearly event, promoted by the Texas Comptroller’s Office, encourages people to shop locally and save money on important items. During this time, you can buy most clothing, shoes, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 without paying sales tax, whether you shop in-store or online from Texas-based retailers.

The tax exemption only applies to qualifying items bought during the Texas Tax-Free Weekend, from August 9th to 11th. Purchases made outside this period are not eligible for the tax break, and no refunds will be provided. Eligible items include most clothing and shoes under $100, but items over $100, subscription boxes, and specific sports gear like golf cleats and football pads are excluded.

What Texas Tax-Free Weekend Covers: Exclusions and How Individual Items Qualify

Additionally, the tax-free status does not cover rentals, alterations, or cleaning services for clothing or shoes. The exemption applies to each qualifying item individually, not the total purchase. For example, if you buy two shirts costing $80 each, both shirts are tax-free, even though the total is $160. This weekend is a great chance to get necessary items without paying sales tax, while also supporting local businesses.
