Despite being invited by the Recording Academy, which extends invitations to all nominees, Combs opted out of the prestigious occasion. Rolling Stone reported in December that the Academy is carefully evaluating the situation, stating, “We are in the process of evaluating it with the time and care that it deserves.”
The artist faced a tumultuous end to 2023 as multiple women accused him of rape and abuse. In November, his ex-girlfriend and artist Cassie filed a lawsuit, alleging a decade of rape and torture. Court records unveiled a distressing narrative of uncontrollable rage and physical assaults during their relationship.
In a surprising turn of events, Combs swiftly resolved the lawsuit within 24 hours, vehemently denying the accusations. However, the storm continued as three more women came forward, accusing him of drugging and sexual abuse. One particularly harrowing claim dates back to 2003 when a woman alleges that Combs, in a disturbing incident, drugged and gang-raped her when she was only 17.
