On the first night of Hanukkah, according to CBS News, Governor Kathy Hochul said that someone had shot at the Temple Israel in Albany, New York. Lucky for us, no accidents were recorded. Authorities at the federal, state, and local levels are all actively examining what happened. The governor wrote on social media that a suspect from the area who is 28 years old has been caught. People who saw the suspect said he fired a gun while making threats. As a safety measure, a nearby early childhood education center was locked down for a short time. The security has since been lifted.
After the shooting at Albany’s Temple Israel, Governor Kathy Hochul stressed how important it is to protect religious groups, especially the Jewish population. The New York State Hate Crimes Task Force is looking into what happened. In September, a bomb threat was made against the temple. Governor Hochul spoke out against racism and said that all acts of violence and hate must stop. Kathy Sheehan, the mayor of Albany, said that the event showed how racism is growing and that everyone needs to work together to stop it. Mayor Eric Adams promised that security would be tightened and that the NYPD would be on high alert, especially at public Menorah displays and lighting events. He stressed that the city would protect people’s right to practice their religion freely.
