Olympic Swimmer Klete Keller Receives Three Years Probation for Involvement in January 6 Riot

Acorrding to CBS News, Klete Keller, a former U.S. swimming Olympic gold winner, was given three years of probation and six months of home imprisonment for his part in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Keller claimed that he got in the way of Congress certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. In 2021, he pleaded guilty to the criminal crime of obstruction of an official procedure. People in the Capitol Rotunda could recognize Keller by his unique U.S.A. sports jacket. Later, Keller tried to delete proof from his phone and threw away the jacket. The sentence shows what happened because he helped attack the Capitol and try to stop the licensing process.

He got three years of probation and six months of home detention. Prosecutors wanted Keller to spend 10 months in jail, but the judge saw Keller’s cooperation, regret, and unique case and decided not to give him that time. Prosecutors said Keller put people’s lives at risk by staying in the Capitol after cops told everyone to leave because he was upset about the election results. Keller, an Olympian three times, pleaded guilty to getting in the way of an official procedure. In order to get mercy, his case focused on how he had become more aware of how bad his actions were and how he had to take care of his family.

He was given three years of probation and six months of home detention. Prosecutors described Keller’s behavior inside the Capitol, such as swearing and shoving a police officer who was trying to keep the crowd under control. Keller wrote a letter to the judge in which he said he was sorry for breaking the rule that protected Capitol workers. He told the judge that he had “damaged the electoral process” and said sorry to the people who were hurt. Prosecutors pointed out Keller’s early help with the government case, which made other people want to do the same. The judge stressed the importance of community service and told Keller he had to do 360 hours of it, which included teaching kids what he had learned from the attack. Keller promised not to let down his guard and left court with his lawyer saying he was happy with the result.
