Disputed Family Relation: Mother Stabbed to Death
The family dispute took place on Saturday at about 12:30 p.m. in Berkeley, in a residence located on the 1000 block of Overlook Road. According to the Berkeley Scanner’s reporting, there, 36-year-old Jonah Roper arrived and was accused of stabbing his mother, who was 60 years old, numerous times. Neighbors stated that they heard pleas for help as well as a “blood-curdling scream,” and they also stated that they observed the suspect chase an older guy out of the property.
As reported by Berkeleyside and confirmed by Officer Jessica Perry, the spokesman for the Berkeley Police Department, Roper drove away from the scene in a vehicle that did not belong to him. Roper was quickly arrested by law enforcement, who reportedly rammed his vehicle in the vicinity of Ninth and Gilman streets, close to the Whole Foods Market. According to the Berkeley Scanner, he was taken into custody at about 12:45 on Saturday.
According to a statement made by a neighbor named Mardi Sicular to the East Bay Times, the deceased woman was “a wonderful person, beloved, kind, and generous, a saint of a next-door neighbor. We are all in utter disbelief. The year 2023 began with Berkeley’s first murder with this incident.
