According to WILMINGTON APPLE, the initiative aims to address the crucial issue of food insecurity while promoting regional farmers and sellers. It was made possible by grant money given to the Wilmington Farmers Market by Winchester Hospital’s Community Benefits program.
This initiative ensures that families and individuals with limited financial resources can take advantage of the multitude of fresh and nutrient-dense foods offered at the market by matching Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits with an equivalent amount in market currency.
No matter their financial situation, everyone should have access to fresh, wholesome food, according to Christine Canevari, president of the board for the Wilmington Farmers Market. “We are proud to support this initiative that not only helps Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients but also supports our hardworking farmers, who are the backbone of our local agricultural economy.”

Here is How the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program works:
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients stop by the information table at the Wilmington Farmers Market. They swipe their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to obtain market cash.
Up to $30 per week in market cash will be offered for use at the market through the end of the season for every dollar spent using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, baked goods, and other items can all be purchased with market money.
This Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program encourages residents to interact with nearby farmers, craftsmen, and food producers while also improving access to wholesome meals. It fosters a better sense of oneness among Wilmington’s diverse population while encouraging community engagement.

Every Sunday from 10 AM to 1 PM, the Swain Green, located across from the Town Common at 140 Middlesex Avenue, is the site of the Wilmington Farmers Market. The initiative will continue until October 1st, assuring ongoing support for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients and neighborhood vendors.
