As 2021 prepares to wind down, the most popular dog names in Vancouver for the year have been revealed – with very little change for the top spots – plus some pup parents were also inspired by the pandemic and the postponed 2020 Olympics.
Bella, once again, topped the charts as the most sought-after female dog name of 2021 in Vancouver, whereas last year’s second place Milo edged out Charlie to snag the top spot in the boy’s category.
Luna – meaning “moon” – was Canada’s overall female favourite, with Charlie – meaning “free man” – being a favourite for male pets across the country.
The research was compiled by pet walking and sitting app Rover.com, who analysed their database of tens of thousands of pet owners across the Great White North.
Although not making it to either top 10 list, pandemic-themed pet names were also on the rise this year, with Covi and Rona – yes, really – being the most popular ones.
Fauci – inspired by Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Officer to the President of the United States – was also a rising star in Rover’s database, with Delta and Zoom also being inspired by 2021’s events.
This year’s postponed 2020 Olympics held in Tokyo also inspired pet parents to name their new furry friend’s after winning Canadian athletes.
Rover.com said that Maggie, Penny and Andre were the most popular names, inspired by gold medallist swimmer Maggie Mac Neil, Penny Oleksiak, the most decorated summer Olympian from Canada, and sprinter Andre De Grasse.
Vancouver’s trending dog names
The number one top tending dog name in Vancouver for 2021 was Boo, which was up a whopping 770% from the previous year. Another big trend for 2021 is Star Wars-inspired names with Leia, Luke, Chewbacca and Yoda all trending up for dogs.
