Edmonton distillery fundraising for service dog
An Edmonton-based distillery is releasing a s’mores flavoured liqueur to help raise funds to get a local autistic boy a service dog.
Hansen Distillery has partnered with the K97 Classic Rock radio station for a fundraiser in hopes of getting seven-year-old Micah a service dog, which costs $30,000.
To debut the fundraiser, the distillery has released a liqueur perfectly suited for the camping season ahead, called the ‘S’Mores Cream Liqueur.’
“This is a passion project for us. Micah’s sister Alexa was shoveling snow for members of our neighbourhood this past winter. We left her a positive review about our experience on our community Facebook page, and our dayhome shared that Alexa was also collecting bottles to help raise money to get her brother a service dog,” explained Shayna Hansen, co-owner of Hansen Distillery.
“We heard the story, and knew that there was something that we could do to help. From our understanding, she has been doing everything in her power to fundraise for her brother. We are touched by her efforts and inspired to participate in any way we can.”
Getting Micah a service dog will help him live life to the fullest and as he prepares for second grade, it will also help him with any stressors he faces in a classroom.
His family hopes that getting Micah a service dog can elevate his capabilities in social settings such as forming friendships.
“As a mom of two myself, I want my kids to be able to participate in anything that they choose to do. Being able to play a small part in Micah’s freedom to be a normal seven-year-old is something that our whole family wants to help with.” said Shayna.
“When we shared the idea with our team, they jumped at the opportunity to participate.”
Hansen Distillery is currently discussing options with Aspen Service Dogs and his family to get Micah the dog.
Customers are encouraged to donate when visiting the distillery. Those not in the area can donate to the Service Dog cause through a GoFundMe Campaign.
