This all started with a light being out on the car.
Most drivers are keenly aware that police officers can conduct traffic stops for all sorts of reasons. It could be over traffic violations, or these encounters could stem from issues with the vehicle. The latter of the two happened recently in Alabama, and the traffic stop became a massive drug bust.
This traffic stop became much more than the officers assumed it would
According to WVTM 13, police officers were on patrol duty in Alabama on February 7th when they noticed a vehicle traveling with the headlights out. Naturally, this warranted a traffic stop on the vehicle and its occupants. The person behind the wheel complied with the officer on the scene and pulled over. However, while talking, the police noticed the scent of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. This gave probable cause for a search of the vehicle.
The traffic stop continued, and the police officers then found the motherload of drugs in the vehicle. This finding included more than 46 pounds of cocaine. The officers were unsure of its street value, but they thought this volume of the white powdery substance to be worth about $2 million. Notably, the Calera Police Chief said that this might be the biggest drug bust the county has ever seen.
Regarding the traffic stop, the Chief said, “I’ve been here 21 years, 24 years in the county, and I don’t remember a seizure that large. It’s a very large seizure. The two officers are both relatively young at the stop. And I’m very proud of them. It’s amazing work.”
The police arrested the two people who were in the vehicle. Following the traffic stop and arrest, authorities learned that they were citizens of Colombia and were in the U.S. illegally. One of the men was wanted for drug trafficking out of Atlanta.
