General Motors quietly ends DEI programs but promises inclusion

DEI programs have been dropping like flies. Some businesses like Target were loud and proud upon dropping DEI programs. Other entities, General Motors have been taking a quieter approach as they slowly back out of the room.

Ford and General Motors quietly scrubs DEI references

A variety of businesses are ending their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. While some announce the end of its programs loud and proud, others are choosing to quietly quit.

According to VPM, a few massive United States companies are deleting some or all of their references to DEI  from recent annual reports to investors.

General Motors is among a group that have deleted or softened its DEI language. Other companies that are quietly quitting include Pepsi, PayPal, Disney, and Chipotle.

Last year, GM provided three paragraphs related to DEI. The section began with, “At GM we are committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In its new 2024 report, diversity isn’t referenced a single time. However, GM does brag about its diverse lineup of cars, trucks, and SUVs, that include EV models.

Ford decided to announce that it was scaling back DEI polices in August. Ford will no longer participate in an annual survey from an LGBTQ advocacy group or participate in a survey that measures inclusion for LGBTQ+ employees.

Ford also stopped using quotes for minority dealerships and suppliers. But it’s unclear what Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC plan to stop doing.

But both automakers promote providing a safe and inclusive work environment. GM brags about building an inclusive culture where employees, customers, dealers, and suppliers of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities can fully participate in GM’s present and future.
