Police officer weighs in on whether going five miles over the limit warrants a speeding ticket

Many people wonder if you can get traffic citations for speeding if you're only going a little over the limit.

Drivers should avoid the dangerous act of speed regardless of citations.

There are many reasons why drivers may get pulled over for traffic stops and receive citations. It could be due to issues related to their cars, but more commonly, people get traffic tickets due to speeding. Because this is so common, many wonder if going below a certain speed means drivers can avoid speeding tickets. One police officer recently took to social media and shared his take on whether drivers can go five miles over and be saved from speeding citations.

Traffic citations and people often want to know the loopholes

Everyone has heard a fellow driver say that you can go five, or even ten, miles over the speed limit and avoid traffic citations. For some, this is a part of their driver’s education. Craig Droka, who posts informational TikTok videos from the perspective of a police officer, recently offered his take. Specifically, he was responding to a question in which someone mentioned being told a threshold for speeding.

Regarding traffic citations, he says a person can be legally pulled over for going one mile over the speed limit. He also informs viewers that it depends on the police officer in question. Some may pull drivers over for traffic stops and issue citations for going only a few miles over, but some may not. This officer says he allows between 10 and 20 mph over the limit. Still, he says it depends on the road and the normal flow of traffic.

Ultimately, Craig says it’s not a question that one officer can answer. He then reiterates that “the speed limit is the speed limit.” He continued, “You go over one mile an hour, you can get hit for speeding.” Of course, speeding is the cause of many car accidents each year, which is why drivers should avoid it.
