In the Kosciuszko National Park in Australia, a woman spotted a newborn foal fall into an icy stream. The woman didn’t hesitate to help and retold her experience on her Instagram account garnering more than 762,000 likes.
In Australia, feral horses known as Brumbies, run freely in the countryside, and though they are a non-native species, they have been around for hundreds of years. Thought to have been the descendants of horses brought over from other countries and either lost or set free, they have survived and are admired and observed by people near and far.
It had been on January 1, 2025 when Sibylla Deen rescued the five-hour old foal.
as she shivered alone in the creek for the second time that morning I knew if I didn’t get her out of the ice cold water she’d die.
With a special connection to nature, wildlife and the wild horses, Sibylla continued her amazing story.
The balance between wild life and human intervention is so fragile and one I approach with deep intuition always. Her young parents came to me, her Mum rubbed her head against mine, they moved around me distressed and helpless. Then they watched as I picked her up, placenta still on her little body and gave her back to them.
Very affected by the experience, Sibylla knew it was time to give the foal back to her mother.
She stayed by my side a little too long, which cracked my heart into a million pieces. I didn’t want to leave her but I knew I had to get out of the water and walk away, allowing them to rebond. When I dared to turn back she was nursing.
Sibylla was worried the foal might not survive. The foal rested, but finally some positive movement.
We stayed with them for two hours after. Her Mum and Dad checking on her constantly as she slept. The herd forming a ring of love and protection. She was barely visible in the grass, she was so tiny. It was nerve racking as I wasn’t sure she’d survive, but she finally woke, and they headed up to the mountain and I let them go.
And finally she states she was asked to name the foal before the herd left.
I was asked to name her. I called her Morning Star. ⭐️ I believe she’s still doing well.
I know this has been a tough year for so many already. May this bring you hope and resilience. Life can be so fragile but small miracles still happen every day.
