Forget about a compact Ram truck. It’s official, the Ram Dakota will return as a mid-size option.
Rumors about a new Ram truck having been circulating for years. The Ram Dakota is expected to make its return in 2027. However, it won’t be a compact option to fight the Ford Maverick. Instead, Stellantis is making a new mid-size truck.
The Ram Dakota will be a new mid-size truck
As rumors of the Ram Dakota began to circulate, drivers were hoping to see a new compact truck to battle the Ford Maverick. However, Stellantis has bigger targets on its mind.
Instead, the automaker is thinking bigger. The new Dakota will be a mid-size truck to fight against the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Nissan Frontier.
This truck segment is a bit more crowded than the Maverick’s. Currently, the Maverick is only being slightly challenged by the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Many people were excited about the compact Ram Rampage when it debuted in South America. It was spotted in America, giving us hope that the smaller truck would be available here.
But unfortunately, that’s not in the plans. According to Motor Trend, Ram CEO, Tim Kunikis, shared that now that the Ram Classic has been discontinued, it’s the perfect time to dip into smaller truck segments.
There is more growth among the mid-size truck market than the compact one. Plus, Kunikis explained that the brand is missing an affordable entry-level truck. A price-friendly, mid-size option would fill that gap.
The STLA platform could support a mid-size truck with plenty of engine options including, gas, hybrid, PHEV, and EV powertrains. Plus, new rumors suggest that Stellantis will build a new mid-size truck at the Belvedere, Illinois assembly plant.
