In a West Philadelphia yard, ten dogs had been abandoned in the bitter cold. A disturbing video had been circulating on social media showing the dogs heavily chained and shivering. The dogs looked so fragile; their bodies so thin and their faces showing signs of utter defeat.

It was the Pennsylvania SPCA who stepped up to help.

These innocent souls were crying out for rescue, for love, for a chance at survival. And we couldn’t turn our backs on them.
The humane organization sent out Animal Law Enforcement officers to the heartbreaking scene. Described as “cold and isolated,” the dogs had been surviving in the cruelest of conditions. All ten dogs were rescued that day. They were finally freed from the living nightmare they had been forced to endure. No one knows how long they had been suffering.

The dogs were rushed to headquarters in Philadelphia, where they received the medical care they desperately needed, but also, the warmth and tenderness they’d been denied for far too long.

For perhaps the first time in their lives, the dogs felt safe.

But there’s more to this story of rescue. While the dogs had been safe in the care of the Pennsylvania SPCA, someone arrived and claimed ownership of the dogs. And without a surrender release, the dogs would not be able to have new lives.
A court battle was being prepared. No one on the side of compassion or justice could even perceive forcing these dogs to be returned to the disturbing conditions from where they had recently been rescued.

But, just as we hunkered down for a long journey through the courts, they were signed over to our custody, and the weight they’d been carrying, not just on their necks but in their hearts, was lifted. Though the criminal case continues, these sweet souls are no longer victims of their past—they’re on a new path, one that leads to healing, comfort, and the love of forever families.
They are safe! These survivors will never have to suffer again.

Ten dogs looking forward to a new future.
