[Watch] High-speed chase ends with suspect crashing car into Michigan living room

A crashed car in a living room

The woman was sitting just feet away from the suspect’s vehicle as it crashed into her house.

Anita Kowal has lived in Berkeley, Michigan her entire life, and has lived in her small suburban home for the last 25 years. The neighborhood is normally quiet, with crime rarely happening on the still street. A loud car may drive through every now and again, but not much else happens.

On January 20, Kowal was on her couch watching TV when she heard a loud crash. When she looked just a few feet to her right, she saw something she thought was only in movies.

“There’s a crash, so I get up and I run outside and I see a police officer running down the street and a car in my house,” Kowal told KTVZ.

The driver of the white Dodge Journey SUV was fleeing police during a traffic stop. He was driving without insurance and had an outstanding warrant for arrest. After crashing into Kowal’s living room, he fled on foot and was apprehended shortly after.

Kowal wasn’t injured but was thankful the vehicle didn’t hit her while on the couch. Especially after discovering the driver was under the influence of narcotics.

“I’m trying to turn it around to be positive. I was 3 feet away from the car. If not, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be here,” she said.

Police say they’ll help fix her house

“You know, I’m sure it was a big surprise to her to hear that a car hit a house and not knowing what was going on. I’m glad that she’s OK, that everyone’s OK and we’ll work on getting that property restored,” said Det. Lt. Andrew Hadfield.

During his twenty years on the force, Kowal’s was the second house he’s seen be involved in a crash.

While she waits, Kowal is concerned about the region’s continuously dropping temperatures and how they will affect her heating bill. The only thing keeping her home sealed is some plastic sheeting held on by duct tape.

“It’s cold right now. My feet, I can feel the draft coming up from underneath my couch,” she said. “Maybe Consumer’s Energy will give me a break, who knows.”
