3 Alabama cops injured by stolen SUV driver
Police officers were responding to a domestic violence call when a suspect in an unrelated case used a stolen SUV to ram into three police cars. The incident occurred in the 1500 block of 14th Street S.W. on Birmingham’s west side.
Two officers were injured in the sudden collision. One was sitting in his patrol car and another was standing near the squad car as it was pushed into him. The 26-year-old driver or suspect became confrontational when an officer approached the wrecked vehicle.
According to AL, the third officer was injured during the struggle to detain the suspect. His name is being withheld pending formal charges. Police officers learned that the SUV was stolen during a domestic burglary in east Birmingham a few hours early.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service treated all members involved in the incident. However, two of the officers and the suspect were taken to the hospital for additional treatment. They have since been discharged.
The stolen SUV and the police cars have significant damage. After the suspect was discharged he was taken to the Birmingham City Jail and placed on a 48-Hour Felony Extension Assault 1st Degree. He also faces charges related to an earlier domestic violence incident.
BPD Officer Truman Fitzgerald shared that to see that amount of damage and for officers to walk away from it, even though they suffered minor injuries, is a blessing. The BPD Special Victims Unit and BDP Wreck Investigators are currently investigating the incident.
