Many familiar vehicles on U.S. dealership lots are exclusively built in Mexico. These range from Ram’s heavy-duty pickup trucks to the Ford Maverick to the Audi Q5. Toyota surprised many when it announced that it was moving 100% of its Tacoma assembly out of its Texas factory and to Mexico. As Redditor BeaglePops7 pointed out, this actually makes the Toyota Tacoma the best-selling U.S. vehicle built exclusively south of the border.
The 2024 rankings of the best-selling vehicles are finally in. And the newly redesigned Toyota Tacoma is near the top of the list. According to the GoodCarBadCar website, the winner is a perennial favorite: the Ford F-Series. It’s followed by other full-size trucks, popular crossovers such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and the Nissan Rogue. Some sedans even made the top 10. Here’s how the list stacks up.

A big fish in a small pond
The Toyota Tacoma has long been the most popular midsize pickup truck. The runner up isn’t even close. That’s the Ford Maverick with 157,345 sales in 2024. But the midsize pickup truck segment doesn’t pull anywhere near the sales numbers as full-size trucks. Or even the sales numbers of crossovers. So while the Tacoma dominates its segment, this doesn’t mean it dominates the entire market. But now the Tacoma dominates a new segment.
Owners of older Toyota Tacomas love to remind everyone that their trucks were assembled in Texas, But Toyota has finally slammed the door on that era. As of 2024, 100% of Tacoma assembly has moved to Mexico. And that gives it an interesting distinction: the most popular vehicle completely assembled in Mexico.
Here’s the kicker: even vehicles sold in Mexico can’t touch the Tacoma’s sales numbers. The most popular vehicle there is the Nissan Versa, which moved 83,551 unites. The Nisan NP300 accounted for another 53,990. The Chevy Aveo came in third at 52,208, while the Kia K3 earned fourth with 47,119 sales. Fifth place? The Volkswagen Virtus (27,260 sales).
What U.S. vehicles are assembled in Mexico?
Many automakers have moved some assembly to Mexico. Some Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500s are built there. And all of Ram’s heavy duty trucks come from Mexico (but not the Ram 1500). But while the full-size Chevrolet truck, GMC truck, and RM truck vehicle families are technically more popular than the Tacoma, the Tacoma is the only one with 100% of vehicles assembled in Mexico.
Other vehicles assembled in Mexico include the Chevrolet Silverado, the Honda Fit, the Honda HR-V, the Jeep Compass, the Kia Forte, the Kia Rio, the Mazda2, the Mazda3, the Nissan Sentra, the Volkswagen Jetta, and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
