Texas Supreme Court Weighs Harris County‘s $500 Monthly Aid Program Amid Constitutional Challenge

Harris County Appeals to Texas Supreme Court to Resume $500 Payments to Low-Income Families as Legal Dispute Persists

According to Axios Huston, Harris County‘s plan to give $500 monthly to around 1,900 low-income families is facing a problem. The Texas Supreme Court is deciding if it’s okay legally. Attorney General Ken Paxton is saying the program breaks the Texas Constitution. He thinks it’s wrong for local governments to give money to people.

Even though a judge said the Uplift Harris program was okay Paxton asked the Supreme Court to stop it. The Court agreed and paused the payments for now. Harris County is asking the Court to let the payments continue while they figure things out.

Furthermore, the program is meant to help families in Harris County who don’t have a lot of money. But, it’s stuck because of the legal fight. People in Harris County are worried it might not continue, but they’re hoping the Court will allow it to help those who need it.
