Congressional leaders have unveiled a $1.2 trillion government funding deal to stave off a potential shutdown looming this weekend. The bill, covering half of the yearly government funding bills, allocates funds to crucial departments such as Defense, Health and Human Services, the IRS and Homeland Security. Notable highlights include $20 billion in proposed cuts to the IRS, bolstered immigration enforcement measures, and increased funding for child care, research, and climate change initiatives.

Bipartisan Support: House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democrats Find Common Ground in $1.2T Funding Bill

House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the bill for getting important wins for Republicans, while Democrats were happy about more money for vital things like child care and medical research. President Joe Biden promised to sign it as soon as Congress agrees. But because Republicans in the House don’t all agree, Democrats might need to help pass the bill. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promised to quickly vote on it in the Senate to make sure the government doesn’t shut down and important things keep running.
