Residents face a 1 in 44 chance of experiencing violent crime and gang related activities are a significant factor contributing to the city’s crime issues. Detroit is well known for its high crime rates which include violent incidents like murders, robberies and assaults and as well as gun violence and gang activity.

3. Benton Harbor A city with about 8,900 people, comes in third place on the list. It has a crime rate that’s 2.46 times higher than Michigan’s average. This means residents have a 1 in 29 chance of facing violent crime. The city deals with difficulties because many people there are poor and there are not many jobs available. The average income is around $32,000. Benton Harbor has a lot of violent crimes like murders, robberies and assaults as well as property crimes such as burglaries.

4. Jackson A city with around 32,000 people also has a lot of crime and a crime rate of 127% higher than Michigan’s average meaning residents have a 1 in 84 chance of being victims of violent crime. 5. Harper Woods A city near Detroit in Wayne County and is known to be one of Michigan’s most dangerous places. A population of around 15,500 and its crime rate is 1.21 times higher than the average Michigan city. This means residents have a 1 in 108 chance of experiencing violent crime. Common incidents in Harper Woods include murders, robberies and assaults.
