The Father of Alleged Lamar High School Shooter, Is Given More Than Six Years in Prison for A Gun Crime

The father of a 15-year-old that who was the alleged Lamar High School shooter and that was accused of fatally shooting a classmate was sentenced to more than six years in federal prison for a gun offense on Thursday, according to U.S. Leigha Simonton is the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas.

John Edward Porter, 50, the father of the alleged Lamar High School shooter was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in March and pled guilty in May. On Thursday, the the father of the alleged Lamar High School shooter  was condemned by U.S. Judge Mark Pittman was sentenced to 77 months in federal prison.

In the recent published article by ATF, according to court filings, law police obtained a search warrant on Porter’s apartment shortly after his son reportedly opened fire at Arlington’s Lamar High School on March 20, fatally shooting one student and injuring another. Agents discovered paperwork for a Mossberg model 500 12-gauge shotgun inside the house, which was seized from the scene of the crime. A trace revealed that Porter’s relative had purchased a gun for him.

Agents also discovered a Smith & Wesson.357 gauge revolver, a Glock.40 caliber pistol, and a Smith & Wesson M&P.556 caliber rifle in Porter’s bedroom. Porter, the father of the alleged Lamar High School shooter admitted to having all four guns, including the Mossberg, despite the fact that he had been convicted of first-degree robbery and sexual battery in Louisiana in 1996 and was thus legally forbidden from carrying firearms. According to records, Porter, the father of the alleged Lamar High School shooter, attempted to buy guns from licensed firearm dealers in 2014 and 2020 but was turned down after a background check revealed his prior felony convictions.

The state has charged the alleged Lamar High School shooter with murder and aggravated assault. He is remains innocent until proven guilty in court. The investigation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Dallas Field Division and the Arlington Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank Gatto.

John Edward Porter previously appeared in court for a hearing for his 15-year-old son who is an alleged Lamar High School shooter.

According to FOX 4, as per to the police, in March, the son used Porter’s shotgun to kill one classmate and hurt another on the steps of Arlington Lamar High School. Porter was prohibited from possessing firearms after being convicted of robbery and sexual battery in 1996.

The alleged Lamar High School shooter is awaiting trial for capital murder. Before proceeding with the shooter’s case, the judge ordered a mental evaluation.
